Discord Viewer Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common setup, hosting, Discord widget JSON and theme customisation questions. Many of these points came from real user feedback from earlier versions of Discord Viewer.

Setup and troubleshooting

Why do I get a PHP parse error or a blank page?

Discord Viewer requires a PHP-capable web server. The premium themes require PHP 7.1 or later, and PHP 8.x is recommended. If you see a PHP parse error, blank page, or unexpected syntax error, your hosting account may be running an older PHP version. Most cPanel hosting providers allow you to change this from Select PHP Version, PHP Manager, or MultiPHP Manager.

Why are some Discord channels not appearing?

Discord only includes public widget-visible channel information in the server widget JSON. If a channel is private, restricted, or hidden from the widget data, Discord Viewer cannot display it. The official Discord widget is affected by the same limitation. Check the channel permissions in Discord and make sure the channel is not private or restricted in a way that prevents it appearing in the widget JSON.

Can Discord Viewer show empty voice channels?

Yes. Premium themes include settings that allow you to choose whether the viewer shows only occupied voice channels or also displays empty channels. This is controlled from the theme settings or admin area, so you do not need to edit the PHP files manually.

Why does the viewer not update instantly?

Discord controls how often the public widget JSON updates. In practice, this can take several minutes. Discord Viewer refreshes the data, but it cannot force Discord to update the widget JSON faster than Discord makes new data available.

Can I change the border, colours, size, or layout?

Yes. Premium themes include a settings panel or theme studio for common customisation options such as colours, backgrounds, icons, logos and layout settings. The free viewer can also be edited, but it is intended as a simpler version and does not include the premium visual settings panel.

Do I need coding knowledge to use Discord Viewer?

No coding knowledge is needed for the premium themes. They include a settings interface that lets you configure the JSON source, invite link, logo, colours and other visual options. Basic file upload knowledge is still required because the viewer must be uploaded to a PHP-capable web server.

Does Discord Viewer work inside an iframe?

Yes. Discord Viewer is designed to be embedded into a website using an iframe. The viewer can also be opened directly as a standalone page. The iframe height and width can be adjusted to suit your website layout.

Why does the viewer need the Discord widget JSON URL?

Discord Viewer reads Discord’s public widget JSON data and uses it to display your server preview, including members and voice-channel activity. Your Discord server must have the server widget enabled, and the JSON URL must be entered into the viewer settings.

What should I do if something does not work?

First check that your server is running PHP 7.1 or later, the Discord server widget is enabled, the widget JSON URL is correct, your invite link is correct, the affected Discord channels are not private, and all theme files were uploaded in the correct folder structure. If you still have a problem, contact us with the theme name, your PHP version, and a clear description of what is happening.

Still stuck?

Discord Viewer has improved over time because users reported real setup problems, bugs and suggestions. If something is unclear, let us know the theme name, your PHP version, and what you expected to happen.
